Co-working continues to expand globally, driven by demand for flexible access to workspaces that foster collaboration and innovation. Building on the ideas explored in ‘The Distributed Cooperative’, Zurich’s entry in the Cities Exhibition of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture & Urbanism will investigate how a cluster of digitally networked working facilities—an ‘extended office’—could be distributed within a neighborhood. The aim will not only be to identify how the latent potential of overlooked urban spaces can be activated through innovative physical and digital design, but also to explore new visions for a vibrant ‘post-retail’ urban streetscape, responding to the accelerated demise of storefront commercial tenancies due to online shopping. At the conclusion of the design sprint, prototype projects will be presented at a public vernissage at Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture, 119 Sejong-daero accompanied by a panel discussion on citizen-centered ‘smart’ urbanism and designing the shared neighborhoods of the future.
